B.re.aks my heart watching the mamas struggle to get back to the water. She is sooo exhausted after all the work required to lumber out of the water, pull herself up the beach, dig the hole, lay her eggs, cover them up and turn her huge body around.Then the pulling forward starts again. When she finally slips beneath the waves, I breath a sigh of relief for her. I also send a prayer to the little ones nestled below the sand, waiting their turn to hatch and head for the water. It is a glorious event.

After four long years, a Leatherback sea turtle — Earth’s largest living turtle — has returned to Sanibel Island, Florida, to nest once again.
