Inside a ‘Dystopian’ Apartment Block Where That Houses Over 20,000 Residence

It’s been labeled ‘the most sustainable living building on Earth’

In Hangzhou, China, the Regent International apartment complex, capable of housing up to 30,000 residents, has gained viral attention for its vast scale and self-sufficiency. Designed by Alicia Loo, known for the Singapore Sands Hotel, this 675-foot tall, S-shaped building is currently home to about 20,000 people, making it one of the world’s most densely populated residences.

The complex includes a wide range of amenities, such as restaurants, pools, grocery stores, and even nail salons, mirroring a complete town within its walls. This setup offers unparalleled convenience and has attracted many young professionals and students, with rents ranging from approximately $200 to $600 per month.

Despite its innovative design and sustainability praises, the building has sparked debate over living conditions in such high-density environments, with concerns about privacy and limited outdoor access. However, some units feature balconies, providing residents with some private outdoor space. Regent International exemplifies a bold approach to urban housing, balancing massive capacity with the challenges of communal living.
