Australia: Mass Shooting at Bondi Beach Hanukkah Event Leaves 10 Dead, Including One Gunman

A devastating mass shooting disrupted a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday evening, claiming the lives of 10 people, including one of the attackers, and injuring at least 12 others, according to New South Wales Police

The attack occurred during the “Chanukah by the Sea” event organised by Chabad of Bondi, where hundreds had gathered to mark the first night of the eight-day Jewish festival. Eyewitness accounts described two gunmen, dressed in black, opening fire from a nearby bridge or walkway, with dozens of shots ringing out around 6:30 pm local time.

New South Wales Police confirmed that one shooter was killed, likely in an exchange of gunfire with officers, while the second was taken into custody in critical condition. Two police officers were among the injured. A brave bystander was reported to have tackled one of the gunmen, potentially preventing further casualties.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the scenes as “shocking and distressing” in a statement, saying: “Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected.” He added that he had spoken with security agencies and urged the public to follow official updates from NSW Police.

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley expressed deep mourning, stating: “Hateful violence has struck at the heart of an iconic Australian community… This was a celebration of peace and hope for the future, severed by hate.” She extended her heartfelt support to Australia’s Jewish community.

The Australian Jewish Association criticised the government for perceived failures in protecting the community amid rising antisemitism, noting the tragedy was “entirely foreseeable.” They highlighted concerns over the safety of Jews in Australia following the incident.

Police have declared no ongoing threat but continue to urge the public to avoid the area. Investigations are underway, with police appealing for footage from witnesses. The motive has not been officially confirmed, though community leaders and officials have described it as a targeted attack on the Jewish gathering.

Emergency services transported victims to multiple hospitals across Sydney, and the beach remains cordoned off as the police operation continues. This incident marks one of the deadliest shootings in Australia in recent decades, evoking memories of past tragedies while shocking a nation known for strict gun laws.
