Father of Three Loses Life Following Incident at Georgia Shopping Center

A tragic shooting in a crowded shopping center parking lot has left Savannah grieving and has renewed community conversations about public safety and how everyday conflicts can escalate with devastating consequences. The incident occurred on the afternoon of January 4, 2026, outside a Target store on Abercorn Street.

Witnesses reported hearing gunfire during what authorities described as a dispute in the parking area, an event that unfolded in broad daylight as shoppers and employees went about their routines. Police officers responded swiftly after receiving multiple calls and located a man with critical injuries. Despite immediate medical attention, he later passed away at a local hospital, deepening the sense of shock across the city.

The victim was identified as Matthew Traywick, a sales manager at Vaden Nissan and a father of three young children. Officials said Traywick was transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. At the scene, officers took 30-year-old Tyler Linn into custody without incident.

Linn has since been charged with murder and aggravated assault. Investigators emphasized that the case remains active as they continue to review evidence and interview witnesses to establish a clear timeline. Authorities also confirmed that Linn previously served in the U.S. Army in a technical position before leaving military service in 2023, noting that there has been no indication that his background is connected to the events under investigation.

City leaders responded with messages of sympathy and reflection. Van Johnson, the mayor of Savannah, issued a statement offering condolences to Traywick’s family and loved ones while underscoring the senseless nature of the loss. He stressed that no disagreement especially one arising from a routine situation such as a parking dispute—should ever result in a fatal outcome.

The mayor commended law enforcement for their rapid response and urged residents to pause, communicate, and choose nonviolent solutions when tensions arise. His remarks echoed a broader call for patience, empathy, and shared responsibility in maintaining community safety.

Friends, colleagues, and family members have remembered Traywick as a dedicated professional and a loving husband and father who placed his family at the center of his life. Those who worked alongside him described his commitment to his job and his kindness toward others.

In the wake of the tragedy, a fundraising effort has been organized to support his wife and children as they face sudden emotional and financial challenges.

As Savannah continues to mourn, many residents say the incident stands as a sobering reminder of how quickly ordinary moments can change lives forever—and of the importance of compassion, communication, and community support in preventing future loss.
