Common Mistakes You Might Be Making With Your Washing Machine’s Detergent Drawer

If your clothes still smell musty or look dull after washing, the problem might not be the machine itself — it could be how you’re using the detergent drawer. This often-overlooked part of the washer plays a key role in proper cleaning, yet it can easily become a source of issues. Over time, detergent residue, dirt, and even mold can build up, reducing cleaning performance and leaving fabrics less fresh than expected.

The first step is to remove the detergent drawer completely. Most machines include a small release tab — press it and gently slide the drawer out. Once removed, wash each compartment with warm water and a mild cleaning solution, using an old toothbrush to reach tight corners and edges. Rinse thoroughly and allow the drawer to dry fully before placing it back.

Be sure to clean the slot where the drawer sits as well, since trapped residue can drip back onto your clothes. It’s also important to understand each compartment’s purpose. The section labeled “I” is for pre-wash detergent, “II” is for main wash detergent, and the flower symbol indicates the fabric softener compartment. Avoid overfilling any section past the max line, as this can prevent proper dispensing and leave detergent behind on clothing or inside the machine.

Regular cleaning and correct use of the detergent drawer can noticeably improve your laundry results. By taking care of this small but essential component, you help your washer run more efficiently, avoid unwanted odors, and ensure each load comes out clean and fresh. A quick drawer clean can make a much bigger difference than you might expect.
