Here’s Why Should You Place Your Luggage in the Bathroom Right After Checking into a Hotel Room

Travel experts often surprise people with their advice, but one recommendation stands out as both unusual and highly practical. According to many professionals, the safest place to keep your suitcase in a hotel room is not the bed, not the floor, and not even the luggage rack. Instead, the ideal spot is actually the bathtub. While this may sound odd at first, there are solid reasons behind the suggestion. The bathtub offers a simple and effective way to protect your belongings from one of the most common and frustrating travel problems: bedbugs.

Bedbugs thrive in soft, warm places where they can hide easily. Mattresses, carpets, and upholstered furniture provide the perfect environment for them to live and reproduce. When travelers place their bags on these surfaces, bedbugs can crawl inside without being noticed. Because these insects are tiny and extremely resilient, they can survive long trips and settle into your home before you even realize you picked them up. What starts as a quick vacation can turn into a long and expensive battle to get rid of an infestation.

The reason the bathtub is considered a safer option is simple. Bedbugs struggle to climb smooth and slippery surfaces. The smooth material of the tub provides very little grip, making it difficult for them to reach your suitcase. Bathrooms also tend to be cleaned more thoroughly and more frequently than other areas of hotel rooms. Housekeeping staff spend extra time sanitizing sinks, toilets, and tubs, which makes these spaces less likely to harbor pests. When you combine the smooth surface with the overall cleanliness of the bathroom, the bathtub becomes one of the least likely hiding spots for bedbugs.

Before settling into any hotel room, experts strongly recommend performing a quick inspection. This step takes only a few minutes but can save you from major trouble later. Start by checking the mattress seams for small rust colored spots, shed skins, or live bugs. Bedbugs often gather near the headboard, so examine that area as well. Inspect nightstands, chairs, and any upholstered furniture. Even luxury hotels are not immune to bedbugs since the insects travel with guests from one location to another. Their presence has nothing to do with how clean or fancy a hotel appears.

If using the bathtub feels uncomfortable or inconvenient, there are other ways to protect your luggage. Placing your suitcase on a metal luggage rack is the next safest option. Metal is harder for bedbugs to climb, though it is not as secure as the smooth surface of a bathtub. Before using the rack, give it a quick check just to make sure no pests are hiding in the fabric straps or joints.

Experts also suggest storing clothing inside sealed plastic bags. This adds an extra barrier between your belongings and any insects that may be lurking in the room. Bedbugs are excellent hitchhikers and can cling to fabric or slip into pockets without being noticed. By keeping clothing sealed until you need it, you significantly reduce the chances of bringing unwanted passengers home with you.

These precautions matter because bedbugs can live for months without feeding. That means even a short exposure during your stay can lead to an infestation after you return home. A little prevention goes a long way and can save you time, stress, and money.

For many travelers, placing a suitcase in the bathtub sounds unusual at first, but it remains one of the easiest and most effective methods to protect your belongings. It requires no special tools, no sprays, and no extra cost. With a quick inspection and a few smart habits, you can enjoy your trip with greater peace of mind and reduce the risk of unwanted surprises after you return home.
