Here’s Why You Should Always Leave an Upturned Glass and a Piece of Paper in the Sink Before Going on Vacation

Most people go through a familiar checklist before leaving for vacation—adjusting the thermostat, clearing out the refrigerator, watering the plants, and making sure everything is locked. But there’s one small detail many people overlook, and it can lead to an unpleasant surprise when they return. When a home is unused for several days or weeks, a lesser-known part of the plumbing system can allow mild odors to develop, making the return home feel less refreshing than expected.

Beneath the sink is a P-trap, a curved pipe that holds a small amount of water. This water serves as a barrier that helps reduce the chance of sewer gases or small insects entering the home through the drain. Daily use keeps this water level stable. However, when the sink is not used for an extended period, the water inside the P-trap may gradually evaporate, which can lead to noticeable odors drifting up from the drain.

Fortunately, there is a simple way to help minimize this issue. Before leaving, you can place a paper towel over the drain and set an upside-down glass on top to hold it in place. This creates a light, breathable cover that helps reduce unwanted smells and discourages insects from entering the pipe. It can be more dependable than rubber stoppers, which sometimes loosen over time, and it requires only basic items you likely already have at home.

For an even fresher return, consider giving the sink a quick clean before you leave. Rinse it with warm water, add a small amount of vinegar to help break down residue, and dry the basin. Then place the paper towel and glass over the drain. This simple step can make a noticeable difference, helping your home feel pleasant and welcoming when you walk back through the door. Sometimes a small precaution adds a lot to your peace of mind.
