My Daughter’s Unexpected Question Changed Our Father’s Day Plans

I opened the door and nearly dropped the tray in my hands because I saw MY OWN FUCKING FACE staring back at me… except it was cleaner, happier, wearing a button-up shirt and holding a bouquet of roses like some Hallmark-movie douchebag.

He smiled that same crooked smile I see in the mirror every morning. “Hey, man. Happy Father’s Day. I heard there was dinner.”

My brain short-circuited.

The little girl—my little girl—came barreling past my legs screaming, “DADDY!” and launched herself into his arms like she’d done it a thousand times. He caught her effortlessly, spun her once, and she giggled the way she only giggles for me.

I just stood there with the tray of garlic bread shaking in my hands.

He looked over her head at me, still smiling, and said softly, “You must be the boyfriend Mom’s been talking about. Thanks for taking such good care of them, bro.”

Bro.

He called me bro.

My daughter kissed his cheek (the same cheek I shave every morning) and yelled, “Come see my new drawing! I made one for both my daddies!”

Both. My. Daddies.

My wife appeared in the hallway behind me, froze, and went white as a ghost.

Because there, standing on our front porch on Father’s Day, holding our daughter like he belonged there, was me.

The real me, apparently.

And I was apparently the side piece who’d been raising his kid and fucking his wife for the last five years while he… what? Worked undercover? Lived a double life? Got lost in the fucking Bermuda Triangle?

He stepped inside, kicked off his shoes exactly where I kick mine off, and said, “Babe, it smells amazing. I missed your lasagna so much.”

Then he looked at me again, tilted his head, and added with this sympathetic little smile:

“Don’t worry, man. She always keeps the other guy around for a while. You’ll get your weekend visitation soon enough.”

And that’s when I realized this wasn’t the first time this had happened.

And it wouldn’t be the last.
