Sad News from the World of Cinema: Actor Peter Greene Passes Away at Age 60
Peter Greene, the talented American actor renowned for his iconic portrayals of powerful antagonists, passed away on December 12, 2025, in his apartment in New York’s Lower East Side. The news was confirmed by his longtime manager, Gregg Edwards, to major outlets including Deadline, NBC News, and the New York Daily News.
Greene was found without signs of life following a wellness check prompted by neighbors who heard music (including holiday songs) playing continuously for more than 24 hours. Police do not suspect foul play, though the exact cause of death is pending determination by the medical examiner.
Born on October 8, 1965, in Montclair, New Jersey, Peter Greene rose to prominence in the 1990s with roles that left a lasting impact on cinema. He specialized in dark and intense characters:
- In The Mask (1994), he played Dorian Tyrell, the ruthless mafia boss who rivaled Jim Carrey’s character.
- In Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece Pulp Fiction (1994), he portrayed Zed, delivering one of the film’s most memorable and disturbing scenes.
Other significant roles include The Usual Suspects (1995), Training Day (2001) alongside Denzel Washington, and Clean, Shaven (1993), where he demonstrated his dramatic range as a character suffering from schizophrenia.
Greene faced personal challenges, including a battle with drug addiction in the 1990s, but he overcame these struggles and continued his career. Recently, he was involved in two projects: an independent thriller Mascots with Mickey Rourke and a documentary narrating the impacts of cuts to U.S. humanitarian aid (USAID).
Manager Edwards described him as “one of the best character actors on the planet,” adding: “Nobody played a ‘bad guy’ better than Peter, but he had a heart of gold and a gentle side that few people knew.”
Greene is survived by a brother and a sister. The film world has lost a unique and unforgettable screen presence.
Rest in peace, Peter Greene. 🕊️
